FairLife L.C.C. and the Kaimakli Home “Archangel Michael” Join Forces to Raise Awareness and Prevent Lung Cancer Among the Elderly in Cyprus
October 14, 2024
During a press conference held in Nicosia, FairLife Lung Cancer Care and the “Archangel Michael” Kaimakli Elderly Care Home announced their collaboration to raise awareness about lung cancer prevention and early diagnosis among the elderly.
“Archangel Michael” Home, with its long-standing tradition of caring for the elderly, is joining forces with FairLife L.C.C. to promote the health and well-being of its residents as well as the wider Cypriot population. During the joint press conference, the importance of prevention and screening using low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) was emphasized, as it can save lives by detecting lung cancer at an early stage.
In her speech, FairLife L.C.C. President Korina Pateli Bell discussed the risk factors for lung cancer, focusing on the elderly, noting that “more than half of lung cancer patients are diagnosed after the age of 65.” She also stressed the need to integrate screening into the National Prevention Plan of each country. Lastly, she highlighted the need to combat age-related stigma, as well as the stigma often experienced by lung cancer patients due to the strong association of the disease with smoking.
Ms. Ersi Papagianni, Director of the “Archangel Michael” Home, emphasized: “In our Home, the care of our residents and their families is our top priority for improving quality of life, and this collaboration allows us to offer even more to those we care for. Through this initiative, we will be able to inform, raise awareness, and protect our people from serious diseases like lung cancer.”
Korina Pateli Bell, President of FairLife L.C.C., proudly stated: “We are joining voices with the ‘Archangel Michael’ Home in a joint effort to reach the elderly population of Cyprus. We want to raise awareness about the importance of prevention and early diagnosis of lung cancer. The Home is a strong partner in our mission to promote health and well-being.”
This collaboration extends beyond the Home’s residents, having a broader impact on Cypriot society.
Through joint awareness campaigns and outreach activities, the two organizations aim to reduce lung cancer deaths, encourage prevention, and promote life-saving screenings.
