Ioannis Boukovinas, chairman of HeSMO: “We are in urgent need of a National Action Plan for lung cancer in our country!”

“We are in urgent need of a National Action Plan for lung cancer in our country”, states the chairman of the Hellenic Society of Medical Oncologists (HeSMO), Ioannis Boukovinas, in the video he kindly provided for the purposes of FairLife – Lung Cancer Care, the first non-profit organization in Greece, dedicated to lung cancer and founded in memory of Simon Bell.
Interviewed by Fairlife’s president, Korina Pateli Bell, Ioannis Boukovinas pointed out that the National Action Plan for lung cancer in Greece should have a clear vision, focusing on:
- Fewer lung cancer patients in Greece.
- More lung cancer survivors in Greece.
- Improved patient and caregiver experience of lung cancer in Greece.
To achieve the above, the National Action Plan is respectively focused on three main axes:
- Prevention
- Early diagnosis
- Improved disease management
Each axis will be supported by the corresponding set of actions, as well as the necessary science indicators.

As Dr. Boukovinas mentioned, unfortunately in Greece, lung cancer shows the highest incidence and mortality rate among other types of cancer and is the third leading cause of death in our country. Furthermore, Greece has the third highest rate of smoking in Europe. Lung cancer continues to have low 5-year survival rates of around 20%, compared to the three most common types of cancer, breast, colorectal and prostate.
The introduction of new oncology treatments, new measures to reduce smoking prevalence as well as early diagnosis, have led to significant decrease in deaths related to lung diseases. However, mortality remains at unacceptably high levels.
Chairman of HeSMO congratulated Fairlife on the work that has been carried out in the very short time since its founding. He also added that HeSMO will be by Fairlife’s side in all future actions, implemented by the organization.
