STAGES OF LUNG CANCER

Stage ΙΙ

Similar to Stage I, cancer is confined to the lung, where it originated. There are no distant metastases. It is divided into two further stages: Stage IIA and IIB.

In Stage IIA, tumors are larger than 4 cm but not more than 5 cm in greatest dimension and have not spread to nearby lymph nodes. Tumors at this stage are surrounded by lung parenchyma or visceral pleura, there may be invasion of the main bronchus or they may have caused atelectasis or obstructive pneumonia.

Tumors in Stage IIB:

  • are larger than 5 cm but do not exceed 7 cm in greatest dimension and have not spread to nearby lymph nodes. However, they have touched or affected the outer lining of the lung or have invaded nearby structures such as the chest wall or the phrenic nerve or sac of the heart. Patients with a tumor in the lung that may have created another tumor or tumors in the same area also fall into this stage.

or

  • tumors do not exceed 5 cm in greatest dimension and have spread to hilar lymph nodes and/or to lymph nodes from the intrapulmonary region with the primary tumor. There may be invasion of the main bronchus or they may have caused atelectasis or obstructive pneumonia.
